26. Surah Ash-Shu'araa' (The Poets)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

1

YUSUFALI : Ta. Sin. Mim.

PICKTHAL : Ta. Sin. Mim.

SHAKIR : Ta Sin Mim.

M& HILALI : Ta-Sin-Mim.

[These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.]

2

YUSUFALI : These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.

PICKTHAL : These are revelations of the Scripture that maketh plain.

SHAKIR : These are the verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.

M& HILALI : These are the Verses of the manifest Book [this Qur'an, which was promised by Allah in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), makes things clear].

3

YUSUFALI : It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.

PICKTHAL : It may be that thou tormentest thyself (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]) because they believe not.

SHAKIR : Perhaps you will kill yourself with grief because they do not believe.

M& HILALI : It may be that you (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers [in your Risalah(Messengership) and in your Message of Islamic Monotheism].

4

YUSUFALI : If (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

PICKTHAL : If We will, We can send down on them from the sky a portent so that their necks would remain bowed before it.

SHAKIR : If We please, We should send down upon them a sign from the heaven so that their necks should stoop to it.

M& HILALI : If We will, We could send down to them from the heaven a sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

5

YUSUFALI : But there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.

PICKTHAL : Never cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it.

SHAKIR : And there does not come to them a new reminder from the Beneficent Allah but they turn aside from it.

M& HILALI : And never comes there unto them a Reminder as a recent revelation from the Most Beneficent (Allah), but they turn away therefrom.

6

YUSUFALI : They have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!

PICKTHAL : Now they have denied (the Truth); but there will come unto them tidings of that whereat they used to scoff.

SHAKIR : So they have indeed rejected (the truth), therefore the news of that which they mock shall soon come to them.

M& HILALI : So they have indeed denied (the truth - this Qur'an), then the news of what they mocked at, will come to them.

7

YUSUFALI : Do they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?

PICKTHAL : Have they not seen the earth, how much of every fruitful kind We make to grow therein?

SHAKIR : Do they not see the earth, how many of every noble kind We have caused to grow in it?

M& HILALI : Do they not observe the earth, how much of every good kind We cause to grow therein?

8

YUSUFALI : Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

PICKTHAL : Lo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.

SHAKIR : Most surely there is a sign in that, but most of them will not believe.

M& HILALI : Verily, in this is an Ayah (proof or sign), yet most of them (polytheists, pagans, etc., who do not believe in Resurrection) are not believers.

9

YUSUFALI : And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

PICKTHAL : And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

SHAKIR : And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

M& HILALI : And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

10

YUSUFALI : Behold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity,-

PICKTHAL : And when thy Lord called Moses, saying: Go unto the wrongdoing folk,

SHAKIR : And when your Lord called out to Musa, saying: Go to the unjust people,

M& HILALI : And (remember) when your Lord called Musa (Moses) (saying): "Go to the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing),

11

YUSUFALI : "The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"

PICKTHAL : The folk of Pharaoh. Will they not ward off (evil)?

SHAKIR : The people of Firon: Will they not guard (against evil)?

M& HILALI : The people of Fir'aun (Pharaoh). Will they not fear Allah and become righteous?"

12

YUSUFALI : He said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:

PICKTHAL : He said: My Lord! Lo! I fear that they will deny me,

SHAKIR : He said: O my Lord! surely I fear that they will reject me;

M& HILALI : He said: "My Lord! Verily, I fear that they will belie me,

13

YUSUFALI : "My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.

PICKTHAL : And I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send for Aaron (to help me).

SHAKIR : And by breast straitens, and my tongue is not eloquent, therefore send Thou to Haroun (to help me);

M& HILALI : "And my breast straitens, and my tongue expresses not well. So send for Harun (Aaron) (to come along with me).

14

YUSUFALI : "And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."

PICKTHAL : And they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.

SHAKIR : And they have a crime against me, therefore I fear that they may slay me.

M& HILALI : "And they have a charge of crime against me, and I fear they will kill me."

15

YUSUFALI : Allah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).

PICKTHAL : He said: Nay, verily. So go ye twain with Our tokens. Lo! We shall be with you, Hearing.

SHAKIR : He said: By no means, so go you both with Our signs; surely We are with you, hearing;

M& HILALI : Allah said: "Nay! Go you both with Our Signs. Verily! We shall be with you, listening.

16

YUSUFALI : "So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;

PICKTHAL : And come together unto Pharaoh and say: Lo! we bear a message of the Lord of the Worlds,

SHAKIR : Then come to Firon and say: Surely we are the messengers of the Lord of the worlds:

M& HILALI : "And when you both come to Fir'aun (Pharaoh), say: 'We are the Messengers of the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists),

17

YUSUFALI : "'Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'"

PICKTHAL : (Saying): Let the Children of Israel go with us.

SHAKIR : Then send with us the children of Israel.

M& HILALI : "So allow the Children of Israel to go with us.' "

18

YUSUFALI : (Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us,

SHAKIR : (Firon) said: Did we not bring you up as a child among us, and you tarried among us for (many) years of your life?

M& HILALI : [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said [to Musa (Moses)]: "Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you did dwell many years of your life with us.

19

YUSUFALI : "And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"

PICKTHAL : And thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates.

SHAKIR : And you did (that) deed of yours which you did, and you are one of the ungrateful.

M& HILALI : "And you did your deed, which you did (i.e. the crime of killing a man). And you are one of the ingrates."

20

YUSUFALI : Moses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.

PICKTHAL : He said: I did it then, when I was of those who are astray.

SHAKIR : He said: I did it then while I was of those unable to see the right course;

M& HILALI : Musa (Moses) said: "I did it then, when I was an ignorant (as regards my Lord and His Message).

21

YUSUFALI : "So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.

PICKTHAL : Then I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).

SHAKIR : So I fled from you when I feared you, then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me of the messengers;

M& HILALI : "So I fled from you when I feared you. But my Lord has granted me Hukman (i.e. religious knowledge, right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood), and appointed me as one of the Messengers.

22

YUSUFALI : "And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"

PICKTHAL : And this is the past favour wherewith thou reproachest me: that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel.

SHAKIR : And is it a favor of which you remind me that you have enslaved the children of Israel?

M& HILALI : "And this is the past favour with which you reproach me, that you have enslaved the Children of Israel."

23

YUSUFALI : Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

PICKTHAL : Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the Worlds?

SHAKIR : Firon said: And what is the Lord of the worlds?

M& HILALI : Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "And what is the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)?"

24

YUSUFALI : (Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."

PICKTHAL : (Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.

SHAKIR : He said: The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure.

M& HILALI : Musa (Moses) said: "Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty."

25

YUSUFALI : (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?

SHAKIR : (Firon) said to those around him: Do you not hear?

M& HILALI : Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said to those around: "Do you not hear (what he says)?"

26

YUSUFALI : (Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"

PICKTHAL : He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers.

SHAKIR : He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old.

M& HILALI : Musa (Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!"

27

YUSUFALI : (Pharaoh) said: "Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!

SHAKIR : Said he: Most surely your Messenger who is sent to you is mad.

M& HILALI : Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "Verily, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!"

28

YUSUFALI : (Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"

PICKTHAL : He said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand.

SHAKIR : He said: The Lord of the east and the west and what is between them, if you understand.

M& HILALI : Musa (Moses) said: "Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!"

29

YUSUFALI : (Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.

SHAKIR : Said he: If you will take a god besides me, I will most certainly make you one of the imprisoned.

M& HILALI : Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "If you choose an ilah (god) other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners."

30

YUSUFALI : (Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"

PICKTHAL : He said: Even though I show thee something plain?

SHAKIR : He said: What! even if I bring to you something manifest?

M& HILALI : Musa (Moses) said: "Even if I bring you something manifest (and convincing)?"

31

YUSUFALI : (Pharaoh) said: "Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!"

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said: Produce it then, if thou art of the truthful!

SHAKIR : Said he: Bring it then, if you are of the truthful ones.

M& HILALI : Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "Bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"

32

YUSUFALI : So (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!

PICKTHAL : Then he flung down his staff and it became a serpent manifest,

SHAKIR : So he cast down his rod, and lo! it was an obvious serpent,

M& HILALI : So [Musa (Moses)] threw his stick, and behold, it was a serpent, manifest.

33

YUSUFALI : And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

PICKTHAL : And he drew forth his hand and lo! it was white to the beholders.

SHAKIR : And he drew forth his hand, and lo! it appeared white to the onlookers.

M& HILALI : And he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

34

YUSUFALI : (Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,

SHAKIR : (Firon) said to the chiefs around him: Most surely this is a skillful magician,

M& HILALI : [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.

35

YUSUFALI : "His plan is to get you out of your land by his sorcery; then what is it ye counsel?"

PICKTHAL : Who would drive you out of your land by his magic. Now what counsel ye?

SHAKIR : Who desires to turn you out of your land with his magic; what is it then that you advise?

M& HILALI : "He wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery, then what is it your counsel, and what do you command?"

36

YUSUFALI : They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while), and dispatch to the Cities heralds to collect-

PICKTHAL : They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners

SHAKIR : They said: Give him and his brother respite and send heralds into the cities

M& HILALI : They said: "Put him off and his brother (for a while), and send callers to the cities;

37

YUSUFALI : "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed."

PICKTHAL : Who shall bring unto thee every knowing wizard.

SHAKIR : That they should bring to you every skillful magician.

M& HILALI : "To bring up to you every well-versed sorcerer."

38

YUSUFALI : So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known,

PICKTHAL : So the wizards were gathered together at a set time on a day appointed.

SHAKIR : So the magicians were gathered together at the appointed time on the fixed day,

M& HILALI : So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time on a day appointed.

39

YUSUFALI : And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?-

PICKTHAL : And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering?

SHAKIR : And it was said to the people: Will you gather together?

M& HILALI : And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble?

40

YUSUFALI : "That we may follow the sorcerers (in religion) if they win?"

PICKTHAL : (They said): Aye, so that we may follow the wizards if they are the winners.

SHAKIR : Haply we may follow the magicians, if they are the vanquishers.

M& HILALI : "That we may follow the sorcerers [who were on Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) religion of disbelief] if they are the winners."

41

YUSUFALI : So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Pharaoh: "Of course - shall we have a (suitable) reward if we win?

PICKTHAL : And when the wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?

SHAKIR : And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers?

M& HILALI : So when the sorcerers arrived, they said to Fir'aun (Pharaoh): "Will there surely be a reward for us if we are the winners?"

42

YUSUFALI : He said: "Yea, (and more),- for ye shall in that case be (raised to posts) nearest (to my person)."

PICKTHAL : He said: Aye, and ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).

SHAKIR : He said: Yes, and surely you will then be of those who are made near.

M& HILALI : He said: "Yes, and you shall then verily be of those brought near (to myself)."

43

YUSUFALI : Moses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!"

PICKTHAL : Moses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw!

SHAKIR : Musa said to them: Cast what you are going to cast.

M& HILALI : Musa (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!"

44

YUSUFALI : So they threw their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the might of Pharaoh, it is we who will certainly win!"

PICKTHAL : Then they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners.

SHAKIR : So they cast down their cords and their rods and said: By Firon's power, we shall most surely be victorious.

M& HILALI : So they threw their ropes and their sticks, and said: "By the might of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), it is we who will certainly win!"

45

YUSUFALI : Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake!

PICKTHAL : Then Moses threw his staff and lo! it swallowed that which they did falsely show.

SHAKIR : Then Musa cast down his staff and lo! it swallowed up the lies they told.

M& HILALI : Then Musa (Moses) threw his stick, and behold, it swallowed up all the falsehoods which they showed!

46

YUSUFALI : Then did the sorcerers fall down, prostrate in adoration,

PICKTHAL : And the wizards were flung prostrate,

SHAKIR : And the magicians were thrown down prostrate;

M& HILALI : And the sorcerers fell down prostrate.

47

YUSUFALI : Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

PICKTHAL : Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

SHAKIR : They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds:

M& HILALI : Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

48

YUSUFALI : "The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

PICKTHAL : The Lord of Moses and Aaron.

SHAKIR : The Lord of Musa and Haroun.

M& HILALI : "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)."

49

YUSUFALI : Said (Pharaoh): "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? surely he is your leader, who has taught you sorcery! but soon shall ye know! Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross!"

PICKTHAL : (Pharaoh) said: Ye put your faith in him before I give you leave. Lo! he doubtless is your chief who taught you magic! But verily ye shall come to know. Verily I will cut off your hands and your feet alternately, and verily I will crucify you every one.

SHAKIR : Said he: You believe in him before I give you permission; most surely he is the chief of you who taught you the magic, so you shall know: certainly I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and certainly I will crucify you all.

M& HILALI : [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all."

50

YUSUFALI : They said: "No matter! for us, we shall but return to our Lord!

PICKTHAL : They said: It is no hurt, for lo! unto our Lord we shall return.

SHAKIR : They said: No harm; surely to our Lord we go back;

M& HILALI : They said: "No harm! Surely, to our Lord (Allah) we are to return;

51

YUSUFALI : "Only, our desire is that our Lord will forgive us our faults, that we may become foremost among the believers!"

PICKTHAL : Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers.

SHAKIR : Surely we hope that our Lord will forgive us our wrongs because we are the first of the believers.

M& HILALI : "Verily! We really hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers [in Musa (Moses) and in the Monotheism which he has brought from Allah]."

52

YUSUFALI : By inspiration we told Moses: "Travel by night with my servants; for surely ye shall be pursued."

PICKTHAL : And We inspired Moses, saying: Take away My slaves by night, for ye will be pursued.

SHAKIR : And We revealed to Musa, saying: Go away with My servants travelling by night, surely you will be pursued.

M& HILALI : And We inspired Musa (Moses), saying: "Take away My slaves by night, verily, you will be pursued."

53

YUSUFALI : Then Pharaoh sent heralds to (all) the Cities,

PICKTHAL : Then Pharaoh sent into the cities summoners,

SHAKIR : So Firon sent heralds into the cities;

M& HILALI : Then Fir'aun (Pharaoh) sent callers to (all) the cities.

54

YUSUFALI : (Saying): "These (Israelites) are but a small band,

PICKTHAL : (Who said): Lo! these indeed are but a little troop,

SHAKIR : Most surely these are a small company;

M& HILALI : (Saying): "Verily! These indeed are but a small band.

55

YUSUFALI : "And they are raging furiously against us;

PICKTHAL : And lo! they are offenders against us.

SHAKIR : And most surely they have enraged us;

M& HILALI : "And verily, they have done what has enraged us;

56

YUSUFALI : "But we are a multitude amply fore-warned."

PICKTHAL : And lo! we are a ready host.

SHAKIR : And most surely we are a vigilant multitude.

M& HILALI : "But we are host all assembled, amply fore-warned."

57

YUSUFALI : So We expelled them from gardens, springs,

PICKTHAL : Thus did We take them away from gardens and watersprings,

SHAKIR : So We turned them out of gardens and springs,

M& HILALI : So, We expelled them from gardens and springs,

58

YUSUFALI : Treasures, and every kind of honourable position;

PICKTHAL : And treasures and a fair estate.

SHAKIR : And treasures and goodly dwellings,

M& HILALI : Treasures, and every kind of honourable place.

59

YUSUFALI : Thus it was, but We made the Children of Israel inheritors of such things.

PICKTHAL : Thus (were those things taken from them) and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.

SHAKIR : Even so. And We gave them as a heritage to the children of Israel.

M& HILALI : Thus [We turned them (Pharaoh's people) out] and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them.

60

YUSUFALI : So they pursued them at sunrise.

PICKTHAL : And they overtook them at sunrise.

SHAKIR : Then they pursued them at sunrise.

M& HILALI : So they pursued them at sunrise.

61

YUSUFALI : And when the two bodies saw each other, the people of Moses said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

PICKTHAL : And when the two hosts saw each other, those with Moses said: Lo! we are indeed caught.

SHAKIR : So when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Musa cried out: Most surely we are being overtaken.

M& HILALI : And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Musa (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken."

62

YUSUFALI : (Moses) said: "By no means! my Lord is with me! Soon will He guide me!"

PICKTHAL : He said: Nay, verily! for lo! my Lord is with me. He will guide me.

SHAKIR : He said: By no means; surely my Lord is with me: He will show me a way out.

M& HILALI : [Musa (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me."

63

YUSUFALI : Then We told Moses by inspiration: "Strike the sea with thy rod." So it divided, and each separate part became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

PICKTHAL : Then We inspired Moses, saying: Smite the sea with thy staff. And it parted, and each part was as a mountain vast.

SHAKIR : Then We revealed to Musa: Strike the sea with your staff. So it had cloven asunder, and each part was like a huge mound.

M& HILALI : Then We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain.

64

YUSUFALI : And We made the other party approach thither.

PICKTHAL : Then brought We near the others to that place.

SHAKIR : And We brought near, there, the others.

M& HILALI : Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place.

65

YUSUFALI : We delivered Moses and all who were with him;

PICKTHAL : And We saved Moses and those with him, every one;

SHAKIR : And We saved Musa and those with him, all of them.

M& HILALI : And We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him.

66

YUSUFALI : But We drowned the others.

PICKTHAL : And We drowned the others.

SHAKIR : Then We drowned the others.

M& HILALI : Then We drowned the others.

67

YUSUFALI : Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

PICKTHAL : Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.

SHAKIR : Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe.

M& HILALI : Verily! In this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers.

68

YUSUFALI : And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

PICKTHAL : And lo, thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.

SHAKIR : And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

M& HILALI : And verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

69

YUSUFALI : And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham's story.

PICKTHAL : Recite unto them the story of Abraham:

SHAKIR : And recite to them the story of Ibrahim.

M& HILALI : And recite to them the story of Ibrahim (Abraham).

70

YUSUFALI : Behold, he said to his father and his people: "What worship ye?"

PICKTHAL : When he said unto his father and his folk: What worship ye?

SHAKIR : When he said to his father and his people: What do you worship?

M& HILALI : When he said to his father and his people: "What do you worship?"

71

YUSUFALI : They said: "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them."

PICKTHAL : They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them.

SHAKIR : They said: We worship idols, so we shall be their votaries.

M& HILALI : They said: "We worship idols, and to them we are ever devoted."

72

YUSUFALI : He said: "Do they listen to you when ye call (on them)?"

PICKTHAL : He said: Do they hear you when ye cry?

SHAKIR : He said: Do they hear you when you call?

M& HILALI : He said: "Do they hear you, when you call (on them)?

73

YUSUFALI : "Or do you good or harm?"

PICKTHAL : Or do they benefit or harm you?

SHAKIR : Or do they profit you or cause you harm?

M& HILALI : "Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?"

74

YUSUFALI : They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."

PICKTHAL : They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this wise.

SHAKIR : They said: Nay, we found our fathers doing so.

M& HILALI : They said: "Nay, but we found our fathers doing so."

75

YUSUFALI : He said: "Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping,-

PICKTHAL : He said: See now that which ye worship,

SHAKIR : He said: Have you then considered what you have been worshipping:

M& HILALI : He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping,

76

YUSUFALI : "Ye and your fathers before you?-

PICKTHAL : Ye and your forefathers!

SHAKIR : You and your ancient sires.
