37. Surah As-Saffaat

(Those Arranged in Ranks)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

1

YUSUFALI : By those who range themselves in ranks,

PICKTHAL : By those who set the ranks in battle order

SHAKIR : I swear by those who draw themselves out in ranks

M& HILALI : By those (angels) ranged in ranks (or rows).

2

YUSUFALI : And so are strong in repelling (evil),

PICKTHAL : And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof

SHAKIR : Then those who drive away with reproof,

M& HILALI : By those (angels) who drive the clouds in a good way.

3

YUSUFALI : And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!

PICKTHAL : And those who read (the Word) for a reminder,

SHAKIR : Then those who recite, being mindful,

M& HILALI : By those (angels) who bring the Book and the Qur'an from Allah to mankind [Tafsir Ibn Kathir].

4

YUSUFALI : Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-

PICKTHAL : Lo! thy Lord is surely One;

SHAKIR : Most surely your Allah is One:

M& HILALI : Verily your Ilah (God) is indeed One (i.e. Allah);

5

YUSUFALI : Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!

PICKTHAL : Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun's risings.

SHAKIR : The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the easts.

M& HILALI : Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all that is between them, and Lord of every point of the sun's risings. (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah).

6

YUSUFALI : We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-

PICKTHAL : Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;

SHAKIR : Surely We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars,

M& HILALI : Verily! We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty).

7

YUSUFALI : (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,

PICKTHAL : With security from every froward devil.

SHAKIR : And (there is) a safeguard against every rebellious Shaitan.

M& HILALI : And to guard against every rebellious devil.

8

YUSUFALI : (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,

PICKTHAL : They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,

SHAKIR : They cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side,

M& HILALI : They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side.

9

YUSUFALI : Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,

PICKTHAL : Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;

SHAKIR : Being driven off, and for them is a perpetual chastisement,

M& HILALI : Outcast, and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment.

10

YUSUFALI : Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.

PICKTHAL : Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.

SHAKIR : Except him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame.

M& HILALI : Except such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.

11

YUSUFALI : Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!

PICKTHAL : Then ask them (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.

SHAKIR : Then ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay.

M& HILALI : Then ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]): "Are they stronger as creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains, etc.) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay.

12

YUSUFALI : Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,

PICKTHAL : Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock

SHAKIR : Nay! you wonder while they mock,

M& HILALI : Nay, you (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]) wondered (at their insolence) while they mock (at you and at the Qur'an).

13

YUSUFALI : And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-

PICKTHAL : And heed not when they are reminded,

SHAKIR : And when they are reminded, they mind not,

M& HILALI : And when they are reminded, they pay no attention.

14

YUSUFALI : And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,

PICKTHAL : And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.

SHAKIR : And when they see a sign they incite one another to scoff,

M& HILALI : And when they see an Ayah (a sign, a proof, or an evidence) from Allah, they mock at it.

15

YUSUFALI : And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!

PICKTHAL : And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;

SHAKIR : And they say: This is nothing but clear magic:

M& HILALI : And they say: "This is nothing but evident magic!

16

YUSUFALI : "What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)

PICKTHAL : When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?

SHAKIR : What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then certainly be raised,

M& HILALI : "When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we (then) verily be resurrected?

17

YUSUFALI : "And also our fathers of old?"

PICKTHAL : And our forefathers?

SHAKIR : Or our fathers of yore?

M& HILALI : "And also our fathers of old?"

18

YUSUFALI : Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."

PICKTHAL : Say (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.

SHAKIR : Say: Aye! and you shall be abject.

M& HILALI : Say (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]): "Yes, and you shall then be humiliated."

19

YUSUFALI : Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!

PICKTHAL : There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,

SHAKIR : So it shall only be a single cry, when lo! they shall see.

M& HILALI : It will be a single Zajrah [shout (i.e. the second blowing of the Trumpet)], and behold, they will be staring!

20

YUSUFALI : They will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"

PICKTHAL : And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.

SHAKIR : And they shall say: O woe to us! this is the day of requital.

M& HILALI : They will say: "Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense!"

21

YUSUFALI : (A voice will say,) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"

PICKTHAL : This is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.

SHAKIR : This is the day of the judgment which you called a lie.

M& HILALI : (It will be said): "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

22

YUSUFALI : "Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-

PICKTHAL : (And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship

SHAKIR : Gather together those who were unjust and their associates, and what they used to worship

M& HILALI : (It will be said to the angels): "Assemble those who did wrong, together with their companions (from the devils) and what they used to worship.

23

YUSUFALI : "Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!

PICKTHAL : Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell;

SHAKIR : Besides Allah, then lead them to the way to hell.

M& HILALI : "Instead of Allah, and lead them on to the way of flaming Fire (Hell);

24

YUSUFALI : "But stop them, for they must be asked:

PICKTHAL : And stop them, for they must be questioned.

SHAKIR : And stop them, for they shall be questioned:

M& HILALI : "But stop them, verily they are to be questioned.

25

YUSUFALI : "'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"

PICKTHAL : What aileth you that ye help not one another?

SHAKIR : What is the matter with you that you do not help each other?

M& HILALI : "What is the matter with you? Why do you not help one another (as you used to do in the world)?"

26

YUSUFALI : Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);

PICKTHAL : Nay, but this day they make full submission.

SHAKIR : Nay! on that day they shall be submissive.

M& HILALI : Nay, but that Day they shall surrender,

27

YUSUFALI : And they will turn to one another, and question one another.

PICKTHAL : And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.

SHAKIR : And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other.

M& HILALI : And they will turn to one another and question one another.

28

YUSUFALI : They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"

PICKTHAL : They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).

SHAKIR : They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.

M& HILALI : They will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side [i.e. from the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, order us for polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islamic Monotheism and from every good deed]."

29

YUSUFALI : They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!

PICKTHAL : They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.

SHAKIR : They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers;

M& HILALI : They will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were not believers.

30

YUSUFALI : "Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!

PICKTHAL : We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.

SHAKIR : And we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people;

M& HILALI : "And we had no authority over you. Nay! But you were transgressing people (disobedient, polytheists, and disbelievers).

31

YUSUFALI : "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).

PICKTHAL : Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).

SHAKIR : So the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste;

M& HILALI : "So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment).

32

YUSUFALI : "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."

PICKTHAL : Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.

SHAKIR : So we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring.

M& HILALI : "So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray."

33

YUSUFALI : Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.

PICKTHAL : Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.

SHAKIR : So they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another.

M& HILALI : Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment.

34

YUSUFALI : Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.

PICKTHAL : Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.

SHAKIR : Surely thus do We deal with the guilty.

M& HILALI : Certainly, that is how We deal with Al-Mujrimun (polytheists, sinners, criminals, the disobedient to Allah, etc.).

35

YUSUFALI : For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,

PICKTHAL : For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful

SHAKIR : Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;

M& HILALI : Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)," they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it).

36

YUSUFALI : And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"

PICKTHAL : And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?

SHAKIR : And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?

M& HILALI : And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?

37

YUSUFALI : Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).

PICKTHAL : Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).

SHAKIR : Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers.

M& HILALI : Nay! he (Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]) has come with the truth (i.e. Allah's Religion - Islamic Monotheism and this Qur'an) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who brought Allah's religion - Islamic Monotheism).

38

YUSUFALI : Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-

PICKTHAL : Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom -

SHAKIR : Most surely you will taste the painful punishment.

M& HILALI : Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment;

39

YUSUFALI : But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-

PICKTHAL : Ye are requited naught save what ye did -

SHAKIR : And you shall not be rewarded except (for) what you did.

M& HILALI : And you will be requited nothing except for what you used to do (evil deeds, sins, and Allah's disobedience which you used to do in this world);

40

YUSUFALI : But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,-

PICKTHAL : Save single-minded slaves of Allah;

SHAKIR : Save the servants of Allah, the purified ones.

M& HILALI : Save the chosen slaves of Allah (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism).

41

YUSUFALI : For them is a Sustenance determined,

PICKTHAL : For them there is a known provision,

SHAKIR : For them is a known sustenance,

M& HILALI : For them there will be a known provision (in Paradise).

42

YUSUFALI : Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,

PICKTHAL : Fruits. And they will be honoured

SHAKIR : Fruits, and they shall be highly honored,

M& HILALI : Fruits; and they shall be honoured,

43

YUSUFALI : In Gardens of Felicity,

PICKTHAL : In the Gardens of delight,

SHAKIR : In gardens of pleasure,

M& HILALI : In the Gardens of delight (Paradise),

44

YUSUFALI : Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):

PICKTHAL : On couches facing one another;

SHAKIR : On thrones, facing each other.

M& HILALI : Facing one another on thrones,

45

YUSUFALI : Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,

PICKTHAL : A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,

SHAKIR : A bowl shall be made to go round them from water running out of springs,

M& HILALI : Round them will be passed a cup of pure wine;

46

YUSUFALI : Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),

PICKTHAL : White, delicious to the drinkers,

SHAKIR : White, delicious to those who drink.

M& HILALI : White, delicious to the drinkers,

47

YUSUFALI : Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

PICKTHAL : Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.

SHAKIR : There shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith.

M& HILALI : Neither they will have Ghoul (any kind of hurt, abdominal pain, headache, a sin, etc.) from that, nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.

48

YUSUFALI : And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).

PICKTHAL : And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,

SHAKIR : And with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes;

M& HILALI : And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes.

49

YUSUFALI : As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.

PICKTHAL : (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).

SHAKIR : As if they were eggs carefully protected.

M& HILALI : (Delicate and pure) as if they were (hidden) eggs (well) preserved.

50

YUSUFALI : Then they will turn to one another and question one another.

PICKTHAL : And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.

SHAKIR : Then shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other.

M& HILALI : Then they will turn to one another, mutually questioning.

51

YUSUFALI : One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth),

PICKTHAL : A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade

SHAKIR : A speaker from among them shall say: Surely I had a comrade of mine,

M& HILALI : A speaker of them will say: "Verily, I had a companion (in the world),

52

YUSUFALI : "Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?

PICKTHAL : Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?

SHAKIR : Who said: What! are you indeed of those who accept (the truth)?

M& HILALI : Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death).

53

YUSUFALI : "'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'"

PICKTHAL : Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?

SHAKIR : What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment?

M& HILALI : "(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?"

54

YUSUFALI : (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"

PICKTHAL : He saith: Will ye look?

SHAKIR : He shall say: Will you look on?

M& HILALI : (The man) said: "Will you look down?"

55

YUSUFALI : He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

PICKTHAL : Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.

SHAKIR : Then he looked down and saw him in the midst of hell.

M& HILALI : So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.

56

YUSUFALI : He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!

PICKTHAL : He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,

SHAKIR : He shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish;

M& HILALI : He said: "By Allah! You have nearly ruined me.

57

YUSUFALI : "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!

PICKTHAL : And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).

SHAKIR : And had it not been for the favor of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought up.

M& HILALI : "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell)."

58

YUSUFALI : "Is it (the case) that we shall not die,

PICKTHAL : Are we then not to die

SHAKIR : Is it then that we are not going to die,

M& HILALI : (Allah informs about that true believer that he said): "Are we then not to die (any more)?

59

YUSUFALI : "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"

PICKTHAL : Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?

SHAKIR : Except our previous death? And we shall not be chastised?

M& HILALI : "Except our first death, and we shall not be punished? (after we have entered Paradise)."

60

YUSUFALI : Verily this is the supreme achievement!

PICKTHAL : Lo! this is the supreme triumph.

SHAKIR : Most surely this is the mighty achievement.

M& HILALI : Truly, this is the supreme success!

61

YUSUFALI : For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.

PICKTHAL : For the like of this, then, let the workers work.

SHAKIR : For the like of this then let the workers work.

M& HILALI : For the like of this let the workers work.

62

YUSUFALI : Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?

PICKTHAL : Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?

SHAKIR : Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum?

M& HILALI : Is that (Paradise) better entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum (a horrible tree in Hell)?

63

YUSUFALI : For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.

PICKTHAL : Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.

SHAKIR : Surely We have made it to be a trial to the unjust.

M& HILALI : Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers, etc.).

64

YUSUFALI : For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:

PICKTHAL : Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.

SHAKIR : Surely it is a tree that-grows in the bottom of the hell;

M& HILALI : Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire,

65

YUSUFALI : The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:

PICKTHAL : Its crop is as it were the heads of devils

SHAKIR : Its produce is as it were the heads of the serpents.

M& HILALI : The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils);

66

YUSUFALI : Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.

PICKTHAL : And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.

SHAKIR : Then most surely they shall eat of it and fill (their) bellies with it.

M& HILALI : Truly, they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.

67

YUSUFALI : Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.

PICKTHAL : And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water

SHAKIR : Then most surely they shall have after it to drink of a mixture prepared in boiling water.

M& HILALI : Then on the top of that they will be given boiling water to drink so that it becomes a mixture (of boiling water and Zaqqumin their bellies).

68

YUSUFALI : Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.

PICKTHAL : And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.

SHAKIR : Then most surely their return shall be to hell.

M& HILALI : Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell.

69

YUSUFALI : Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;

PICKTHAL : They indeed found their fathers astray,

SHAKIR : Surely they found their fathers going astray,

M& HILALI : Verily, they found their fathers on the wrong path;

70

YUSUFALI : So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!

PICKTHAL : But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.

SHAKIR : So in their footsteps they are being hastened on.

M& HILALI : So they (too) made haste to follow in their footsteps!

71

YUSUFALI : And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray;-

PICKTHAL : And verily most of the men of old went astray before them,

SHAKIR : And certainly most of the ancients went astray before them,

M& HILALI : And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them;

72

YUSUFALI : But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-

PICKTHAL : And verily We sent among them warners.

SHAKIR : And certainly We sent among them warners.

M& HILALI : And indeed We sent among them warners (Messengers);

73

YUSUFALI : Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-

PICKTHAL : Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,

SHAKIR : Then see how was the end of those warned,

M& HILALI : Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not).

74

YUSUFALI : Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah.

PICKTHAL : Save single-minded slaves of Allah.

SHAKIR : Except the servants of Allah, the purified ones.

M& HILALI : Except the chosen slaves of Allah (faithful, obedient, and true believers of Islamic Monotheism).

75

YUSUFALI : (In the days of old), Noah cried to Us, and We are the best to hear prayer.

PICKTHAL : And Noah verily prayed unto Us, and gracious was the Hearer of his prayer

SHAKIR : And Nuh did certainly call upon Us, and most excellent answerer of prayer are We.

M& HILALI : And indeed Nuh (Noah) invoked Us, and We are the Best of those who answer (the request).

76

YUSUFALI : And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity,

PICKTHAL : And We saved him and his household from the great distress,

SHAKIR : And We delivered him and his followers from the mighty distress.

M& HILALI : And We rescued him and his family from the great distress (i.e. drowning),

77

YUSUFALI : And made his progeny to endure (on this earth);

PICKTHAL : And made his seed the survivors,

SHAKIR : And We made his offspring the survivors.

M& HILALI : And, his progeny, them We made the survivors (i.e. Shem, Ham and Japheth).

78

YUSUFALI : And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times:

PICKTHAL : And left for him among the later folk (the salutation):

SHAKIR : And We perpetuated to him (praise) among the later generations.

M& HILALI : And left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations to come in later times:

79

YUSUFALI : "Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!"

PICKTHAL : Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!

SHAKIR : Peace and salutation to Nuh among the nations.

M& HILALI : Salamun (peace) be upon Nuh (Noah) (from Us) among the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!"

80

YUSUFALI : Thus indeed do we reward those who do right.

PICKTHAL : Lo! thus do We reward the good.

SHAKIR : Thus do We surely reward the doers of good.

M& HILALI : Verily, thus We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers - see V.2:112).

81

YUSUFALI : For he was one of our believing Servants.

PICKTHAL : Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.

SHAKIR : Surely he was of Our believing servants.

M& HILALI : Verily, he [Nuh (Noah)] was one of Our believing slaves.

82

YUSUFALI : Then the rest we overwhelmed in the Flood.

PICKTHAL : Then We did drown the others.

SHAKIR : Then We drowned the others

M& HILALI : Then We drowned the other (disbelievers and polytheists, etc.).

83

YUSUFALI : Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham.

PICKTHAL : And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham

SHAKIR : And most surely Ibrahim followed his way.

M& HILALI : And, verily, among those who followed his [Nuh's (Noah)] way (Islamic Monotheism) was Ibrahim (Abraham).

84

YUSUFALI : Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.

PICKTHAL : When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;

SHAKIR : When he came to his Lord with a free heart,

M& HILALI : When he came to his Lord with a pure heart [attached to Allah Alone and none else, worshipping none but Allah Alone true Islamic Monotheism, pure from the filth of polytheism].

85

YUSUFALI : Behold! he said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship?

PICKTHAL : When he said unto his father and his folk: What is it that ye worship?

SHAKIR : When he said to his father and his people: What is it that you worship?

M& HILALI : When he said to his father and to his people: "What is it that which you worship?

86

YUSUFALI : "Is it a falsehood- gods other than Allah- that ye desire?

PICKTHAL : Is it a falsehood - gods beside Allah - that ye desire?

SHAKIR : A lie-- gods besides Allah-- do you desire?

M& HILALI : "Is it a falsehood aliha (gods) other than Allah that you seek?

87

YUSUFALI : "Then what is your idea about the Lord of the worlds?"

PICKTHAL : What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?

SHAKIR : What is then your idea about the Lord of the worlds?

M& HILALI : "Then what do you think about the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists)?"

88

YUSUFALI : Then did he cast a glance at the Stars.

PICKTHAL : And he glanced a glance at the stars

SHAKIR : Then he looked at the stars, looking up once,

M& HILALI : Then he cast a glance at the stars (to deceive them),

89

YUSUFALI : And he said, "I am indeed sick (at heart)!"

PICKTHAL : Then said: Lo! I feel sick!

SHAKIR : Then he said: Surely I am sick (of your worshipping these).

M& HILALI : And he said: "Verily, I am sick (with plague. He did this trick to remain in their temple of idols to destroy them and not to accompany them to the pagan's feast)."

90

YUSUFALI : So they turned away from him, and departed.

PICKTHAL : And they turned their backs and went away from him.

SHAKIR : So they went away from him, turning back.

M& HILALI : So they turned away from him, and departed (for fear of the disease).

91

YUSUFALI : Then did he turn to their gods and said, "will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)?...

PICKTHAL : Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat?

SHAKIR : Then he turned aside to their gods secretly and said: What! do you not eat?

M& HILALI : Then he turned to their aliha (gods) and said: "Will you not eat (of the offering before you)?

92

YUSUFALI : "What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?"

PICKTHAL : What aileth you that ye speak not?

SHAKIR : What is the matter with you that you do not speak?

M& HILALI : "What is the matter with you that you speak not?"

93

YUSUFALI : Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.

PICKTHAL : Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.

SHAKIR : Then he turned against them secretly, smiting them with the right hand.

M& HILALI : Then he turned upon them, striking (them) with (his) right hand.

94

YUSUFALI : Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).

PICKTHAL : And (his people) came toward him, hastening.

SHAKIR : So they (people) advanced towards him, hastening.

M& HILALI : Then they (the worshippers of idols) came, towards him, hastening.

95

YUSUFALI : He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?

PICKTHAL : He said: Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve

SHAKIR : Said he: What! do you worship what you hew out?

M& HILALI : He said: "Worship you that which you (yourselves) carve?

96

YUSUFALI : "But Allah has created you and your handwork!"

PICKTHAL : When Allah hath created you and what ye make?

SHAKIR : And Allah has created you and what you make.

M& HILALI : "While Allah has created you and what you make!"

97

YUSUFALI : They said, "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!"

PICKTHAL : They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.

SHAKIR : They said: Build for him a furnace, then cast him into the burning fire.

M& HILALI : They said: "Build for him a building (it is said that the building was like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!"

98

YUSUFALI : (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!

PICKTHAL : And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.

SHAKIR : And they desired a war against him, but We brought them low.

M& HILALI : So they plotted a plot against him, but We made them the lowest.

99

YUSUFALI : He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!

PICKTHAL : And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.

SHAKIR : And he said: Surely I fly to my lord; He will guide me.

M& HILALI : And he said (after his rescue from the fire): "Verily, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!"

100

YUSUFALI : "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"

PICKTHAL : My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.

SHAKIR : My Lord! grant me of the doers of good deeds.

M& HILALI : "My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous."

101

YUSUFALI : So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.

PICKTHAL : So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.

SHAKIR : So We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance.

M& HILALI : So We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy.

102

YUSUFALI : Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"

PICKTHAL : And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.

SHAKIR : And when he attained to working with him, he said: O my son! surely I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice you; consider then what you see. He said: O my father! do what you are commanded; if Allah please, you will find me of the patient ones.

M& HILALI : And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allah), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Insha' Allah (if Allah will), you shall find me of As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.)."

103

YUSUFALI : So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),

PICKTHAL : Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,

SHAKIR : So when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead,

M& HILALI : Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering);

104

YUSUFALI : We called out to him "O Abraham!

PICKTHAL : We called unto him: O Abraham!

SHAKIR : And We called out to him saying: O Ibrahim!

M& HILALI : And We called out to him: "O Abraham!

105

YUSUFALI : "Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!" - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

PICKTHAL : Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good.

SHAKIR : You have indeed shown the truth of the vision; surely thus do We reward the doers of good:

M& HILALI : You have fulfilled the dream (vision)!" Verily! Thus do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers - see V.2:112).

106

YUSUFALI : For this was obviously a trial-

PICKTHAL : Lo! that verily was a clear test.

SHAKIR : Most surely this is a manifest trial.

M& HILALI : Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial

107

YUSUFALI : And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:

PICKTHAL : Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.

SHAKIR : And We ransomed him with a Feat sacrifice.

M& HILALI : And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (i.e.  - a ram);

108

YUSUFALI : And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

PICKTHAL : And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):

SHAKIR : And We perpetuated (praise) to him among the later generations.

M& HILALI : And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times.

109

YUSUFALI : "Peace and salutation to Abraham!"

PICKTHAL : Peace be unto Abraham!

SHAKIR : Peace be on Ibrahim.

M& HILALI : Salamun (peace) be upon Ibrahim (Abraham)!"

110

YUSUFALI : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

PICKTHAL : Thus do We reward the good.

SHAKIR : Thus do We reward the doers of good.

M& HILALI : Thus indeed do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers - see V.2:112).

111

YUSUFALI : For he was one of our believing Servants.

PICKTHAL : Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.

SHAKIR : Surely he was one of Our believing servants.

M& HILALI : Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves.

112

YUSUFALI : And We gave him the good news of Isaac - a prophet,- one of the Righteous.

PICKTHAL : And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.

SHAKIR : And We gave him the good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the good ones.

M& HILALI : And We gave him the glad tidings of Ishaque (Isaac) a Prophet from the righteous.

113

YUSUFALI : We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.

PICKTHAL : And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.

SHAKIR : And We showered Our blessings on him and on Ishaq; and of their offspring are the doers of good, and (also) those who are clearly unjust to their own souls.

M& HILALI : We blessed him and Ishaque (Isaac), and of their progeny are (some) that do right, and some that plainly wrong themselves.

114

YUSUFALI : Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron,

PICKTHAL : And We verily gave grace unto Moses and Aaron,

SHAKIR : And certainly We conferred a favor on Musa and Haroun.

M& HILALI : And, indeed We gave Our Grace to Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron).

115

YUSUFALI : And We delivered them and their people from (their) Great Calamity;

PICKTHAL : And saved them and their people from the great distress,

SHAKIR : And We delivered them both and their people from the mighty distress.

M& HILALI : And We saved them and their people from the great distress;

116

YUSUFALI : And We helped them, so they overcame (their troubles);

PICKTHAL : And helped them so that they became the victors.

SHAKIR : And We helped them, so they were the vanquishers.

M& HILALI : And helped them, so that they became the victors;

117

YUSUFALI : And We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;

PICKTHAL : And We gave them the clear Scripture

SHAKIR : And We gave them both the Book that made (things) clear.

M& HILALI : And We gave them the clear Scripture;

118

YUSUFALI : And We guided them to the Straight Way.

PICKTHAL : And showed them the right path.

SHAKIR : And We guided them both on the right way.

M& HILALI : And guided them to the Right Path;

119

YUSUFALI : And We left (this blessing) for them among generations (to come) in later times:

PICKTHAL : And We left for them among the later folk (the salutation):

SHAKIR : And We perpetuated (praise) to them among the later generations.

M& HILALI : And We left for them (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times;

120

YUSUFALI : "Peace and salutation to Moses and Aaron!"

PICKTHAL : Peace be unto Moses and Aaron!

SHAKIR : Peace be on Musa and Haroun.

M& HILALI : Salamun (peace) be upon Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)!"

121

YUSUFALI : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

PICKTHAL : Lo! thus do We reward the good.

SHAKIR : Even thus do We reward the doers of good.

M& HILALI : Verily, thus do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers - see V.2:112).

122

YUSUFALI : For they were two of our believing Servants.

PICKTHAL : Lo! they are two of Our believing slaves.

SHAKIR : Surely they were both of Our believing servants.

M& HILALI : Verily! They were two of Our believing slaves.

123

YUSUFALI : So also was Elias among those sent (by Us).

PICKTHAL : And lo! Elias was of those sent (to warn),

SHAKIR : And Ilyas was most surely of the messengers.

M& HILALI : And verily, Iliyas (Elias) was one of the Messengers.

124

YUSUFALI : Behold, he said to his people, "Will ye not fear (Allah)?

PICKTHAL : When he said unto his folk: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

SHAKIR : When he said to his people: Do you not guard (against evil)?

M& HILALI : When he said to his people: "Will you not fear Allah?

125

YUSUFALI : "Will ye call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators,-

PICKTHAL : Will ye cry unto Baal and forsake the Best of creators,

SHAKIR : What! do you call upon Ba'l and forsake the best of the creators,

M& HILALI : "Will you call upon Ba'l (a well- known idol of his nation whom they used to worship) and forsake the Best of creators,

126

YUSUFALI : "Allah, your Lord and Cherisher and the Lord and Cherisher of your fathers of old?"

PICKTHAL : Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?

SHAKIR : Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore?

M& HILALI : "Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?"

127

YUSUFALI : But they rejected him, and they will certainly be called up (for punishment),-

PICKTHAL : But they denied him, so they surely will be haled forth (to the doom)

SHAKIR : But they called him a liar, therefore they shall most surely be brought up.

M& HILALI : But they denied him [Iliyas (Elias)], so they will certainly be brought forth (to the punishment),

128

YUSUFALI : Except the sincere and devoted Servants of Allah (among them).

PICKTHAL : Save single-minded slaves of Allah.

SHAKIR : But not the servants of Allah, the purified ones.

M& HILALI : Except the chosen slaves of Allah.

129

YUSUFALI : And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:

PICKTHAL : And we left for him among the later folk (the salutation):

SHAKIR : And We perpetuated to him (praise) among the later generations.

M& HILALI : And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times;

130

YUSUFALI : "Peace and salutation to such as Elias!"

PICKTHAL : Peace be unto Elias!

SHAKIR : Peace be on Ilyas.

M& HILALI : Salamun (peace) be upon Ilyasin (Elias)!"

131

YUSUFALI : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.

PICKTHAL : Lo! thus do We reward the good.

SHAKIR : Even thus do We reward the doers of good.

M& HILALI : Verily, thus do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers, who perform good deeds totally for Allah's sake only - see V.2:112).

132

YUSUFALI : For he was one of our believing Servants.

PICKTHAL : Lo! he is one of our believing slaves.

SHAKIR : Surely he was one of Our believing servants.

M& HILALI : Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves.

133

YUSUFALI : So also was Lut among those sent (by Us).

PICKTHAL : And lo! Lot verily was of those sent (to warn).

SHAKIR : And Lut was most surely of the messengers.

M& HILALI : And verily, Lout (Lot) was one of the Messengers.

134

YUSUFALI : Behold, We delivered him and his adherents, all

PICKTHAL : When We saved him and his household, every one,

SHAKIR : When We delivered him and his followers, all--

M& HILALI : When We saved him and his family, all,

135

YUSUFALI : Except an old woman who was among those who lagged behind:

PICKTHAL : Save an old woman among those who stayed behind;

SHAKIR : Except an old woman (who was) amongst those who tarried.

M& HILALI : Except an old woman (his wife) who was among those who remained behind.

136

YUSUFALI : Then We destroyed the rest.

PICKTHAL : Then We destroyed the others.

SHAKIR : Then We destroyed the others.

M& HILALI : Then We destroyed the rest [i.e. the towns of Sodom at the place of the Dead Sea (now) in Palestine]. [See the "Book of History" by Ibn Kathir].

137

YUSUFALI : Verily, ye pass by their (sites), by day-

PICKTHAL : And lo! ye verily pass by (the ruin of) them in the morning

SHAKIR : And most surely you pass by them in the morning,

M& HILALI : Verily, you pass by them in the morning.

138

YUSUFALI : And by night: will ye not understand?

PICKTHAL : And at night-time; have ye then no sense?

SHAKIR : And at night; do you not then understand?

M& HILALI : And at night; will you not then reflect?

139

YUSUFALI : So also was Jonah among those sent (by Us).

PICKTHAL : And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn)

SHAKIR : And Yunus was most surely of the messengers.

M& HILALI : And, verily, Yunus (Jonah) was one of the Messengers.

140

YUSUFALI : When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden,

PICKTHAL : When he fled unto the laden ship,

SHAKIR : When he ran away to a ship completely laden,

M& HILALI : When he ran to the laden ship,

141

YUSUFALI : He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:

PICKTHAL : And then drew lots and was of those rejected;

SHAKIR : So he shared (with them), but was of those who are cast off.

M& HILALI : He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers,

142

YUSUFALI : Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.

PICKTHAL : And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;

SHAKIR : So the fish swallowed him while he did that for which he blamed himself

M& HILALI : Then a (big) fish swallowed him and he had done an act worthy of blame.

143

YUSUFALI : Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,

PICKTHAL : And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)

SHAKIR : But had it not been that he was of those who glorify (Us),

M& HILALI : Had he not been of them who glorify Allah,

144

YUSUFALI : He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection.

PICKTHAL : He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;

SHAKIR : He would certainly have tarried in its belly to the day when they are raised.

M& HILALI : He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection.

145

YUSUFALI : But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,

PICKTHAL : Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;

SHAKIR : Then We cast him on to the vacant surface of the earth while he was sick.

M& HILALI : But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick,

146

YUSUFALI : And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.

PICKTHAL : And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him;

SHAKIR : And We caused to grow up for him a gourdplant.

M& HILALI : And We caused a plant of gourd to grow over him.

147

YUSUFALI : And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.

PICKTHAL : And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more

SHAKIR : And We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded.

M& HILALI : And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or even more.

148

YUSUFALI : And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.

PICKTHAL : And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while.

SHAKIR : And they believed, so We gave them provision till a time.

M& HILALI : And they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while.

149

YUSUFALI : Now ask them their opinion: Is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?-

PICKTHAL : Now ask them (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons?

SHAKIR : Then ask them whether your Lord has daughters and they have sons.

M& HILALI : Now ask them (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]): "Are there (only) daughters for your Lord and sons for them?"

150

YUSUFALI : Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?

PICKTHAL : Or created We the angels females while they were present?

SHAKIR : Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses?

M& HILALI : Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses?

151

YUSUFALI : Is it not that they say, from their own invention,

PICKTHAL : Lo! it is of their falsehood that they say:

SHAKIR : Now surely it is of their own lie that they say:

M& HILALI : Verily, it is of their falsehood that they (Quraish pagans) say:

152

YUSUFALI : "Allah has begotten children"? but they are liars!

PICKTHAL : Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie.

SHAKIR : Allah has begotten; and most surely they are liars.

M& HILALI : "Allah has begotten off spring or children (i.e. angels are the daughters of Allah)?" And, verily, they are liars!

153

YUSUFALI : Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons?

PICKTHAL : (And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons.

SHAKIR : Has He chosen daughters in preference to sons?

M& HILALI : Has He (then) chosen daughters rather than sons?

154

YUSUFALI : What is the matter with you? How judge ye?

PICKTHAL : What aileth you? How judge ye?

SHAKIR : What is the matter with you, how is it that you judge?

M& HILALI : What is the matter with you? How do you decide?

155

YUSUFALI : Will ye not then receive admonition?

PICKTHAL : Will ye not then reflect?

SHAKIR : Will you not then mind?

M& HILALI : Will you not then remember?

156

YUSUFALI : Or have ye an authority manifest?

PICKTHAL : Or have ye a clear warrant?

SHAKIR : Or have you a clear authority?

M& HILALI : Or is there for you a plain authority?

157

YUSUFALI : Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful!

PICKTHAL : Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful.

SHAKIR : Then bring your book, if you are truthful.

M& HILALI : Then bring your Book if you are truthful!

158

YUSUFALI : And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his Judgment-Seat)!

PICKTHAL : And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him).

SHAKIR : And they assert a relationship between Him and the jinn; and certainly the jinn do know that they shall surely be brought up;

M& HILALI : And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts).

159

YUSUFALI : Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)!

PICKTHAL : Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him),

SHAKIR : Glory be to Allah (for freedom) from what they describe;

M& HILALI : Glorified is Allah! (He is Free) from what they attribute unto Him!

160

YUSUFALI : Not (so do) the Servants of Allah, sincere and devoted.

PICKTHAL : Save single-minded slaves of Allah.

SHAKIR : But not so the servants of Allah, the purified ones.

M& HILALI : Except the slaves of Allah, whom He choses (for His Mercy i.e. true believers of Islamic Monotheism who do not attribute false things unto Allah).

161

YUSUFALI : For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship-

PICKTHAL : Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship,

SHAKIR : So surely you and what you worship,

M& HILALI : So, verily you (pagans) and those whom you worship (idols).

162

YUSUFALI : Can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah,

PICKTHAL : Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him.

SHAKIR : Not against Him can you cause (any) to fall into trial,

M& HILALI : Cannot lead astray [turn away from Him (Allah) anyone of the believers],

163

YUSUFALI : Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire!

PICKTHAL : Save him who is to burn in hell.

SHAKIR : Save him who will go to hell.

M& HILALI : Except those who are predestined to burn in Hell!

164

YUSUFALI : (Those ranged in ranks say): "Not one of us but has a place appointed;

PICKTHAL : There is not one of us but hath his known position.

SHAKIR : And there is none of us but has an assigned place,

M& HILALI : There is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position);

165

YUSUFALI : "And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service);

PICKTHAL : Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks,

SHAKIR : And most surely we are they who draw themselves out in ranks,

M& HILALI : Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows for the prayers (as you Muslims stand in rows for your prayers);

166

YUSUFALI : "And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!"

PICKTHAL : Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise

SHAKIR : And we are most surely they who declare the glory (of Allah).

M& HILALI : Verily, we (angels), we are they who glorify (Allah's Praises i.e. perform prayers).

167

YUSUFALI : And there were those who said,

PICKTHAL : And indeed they used to say:

SHAKIR : And surely they used to say:

M& HILALI : And indeed they (Arab pagans) used to say;

168

YUSUFALI : "If only we had had before us a Message from those of old,

PICKTHAL : If we had but a reminder from the men of old

SHAKIR : Had we a reminder from those of yore,

M& HILALI : "If we had a reminder as had the men of old (before the coming of Prophet Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]as a Messenger of Allah).

169

YUSUFALI : "We should certainly have been Servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!"

PICKTHAL : We would be single-minded slaves of Allah.

SHAKIR : We would certainly have been the servants of Allah-- the purified ones.

M& HILALI : "We would have indeed been the chosen slaves of Allah (true believers of Islamic Monotheism)!"

170

YUSUFALI : But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know!

PICKTHAL : Yet (now that it is come) they disbelieve therein; but they will come to know.

SHAKIR : But (now) they disbelieve in it, so they will come to know.

M& HILALI : But (now that the Qur'an has come) they disbelieve therein (i.e. in the Qur'an and in Prophet Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam], and all that which he brought, the Divine Revelation), so they will come to know!

171

YUSUFALI : Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to our Servants sent (by Us),

PICKTHAL : And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn)

SHAKIR : And certainly Our word has already gone forth in respect of Our servants, the messengers:

M& HILALI : And, verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for Our slaves, the Messengers,

172

YUSUFALI : That they would certainly be assisted,

PICKTHAL : That they verily would be helped,

SHAKIR : Most surely they shall be the assisted ones

M& HILALI : That they verily would be made triumphant.

173

YUSUFALI : And that Our forces,- they surely must conquer.

PICKTHAL : And that Our host, they verily would be the victors.

SHAKIR : And most surely Our host alone shall be the victorious ones.

M& HILALI : And that Our hosts, they verily would be the victors.

174

YUSUFALI : So turn thou away from them for a little while,

PICKTHAL : So withdraw from them (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]) awhile,

SHAKIR : Therefore turn away from them till a time,

M& HILALI : So turn away (O Muhammad [sallallahu alayhi wa sallam]) from them for a while,

175

YUSUFALI : And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!

PICKTHAL : And watch, for they will (soon) see.

SHAKIR : And (then) see them, so they too shall see.

M& HILALI : And watch them and they shall see (the punishment)!

176

YUSUFALI : Do they wish (indeed) to hurry on our Punishment?

PICKTHAL : Would they hasten on Our doom?

SHAKIR : What! would they then hasten on Our chastisement?
